Adult Clients

We welcome adult clients for Speech Pathology services.

There are a multitude of conditions that affect communication. Some of these are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Tourette’s Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Down’s Syndrome and Stuttering.

At Tanya Relan Speech Pathology, we have a special interest in treating ADHD and ASD in adults. We provide a holistic treatment approach, taking into account your specific communication needs, to foster work and personal relationships. We also provide Resume and Job Interview Preparation skills.

Articulation

Speech is a complex and automatic process in which sounds are generated to form words, phrases, sentences and conversation.
Speech sound/articulation/phonological disorders relate to difficulty in forming sounds with the articulators (i.e. mouth, teeth, jaw, tongue, palate).

Language

Language is a term used to describe the process of putting words together to understand and create meaning. There are 2 areas of language: Receptive Language and Expressive Language. Receptive Language is about the ability to understand language and follow instructions. Expressive Language is about the ability to use language to form grammatical sentences and ensure the message is understood by others. We address both areas in our therapy.

Social Skills (Pragmatics)

Using language appropriately across various social situations is essential. ‘Social skills’ is a term used to encompass a variety of areas such as topic maintenance, eye contact, turn taking within conversation, modifying language according to the audience/context, understanding and showing humour. Social skills are often compromised in those with conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Avoiding using a tangential communication style is an area often targeted in adults with ADHD.

Stuttering

Stuttering is a type of fluency disorder, in which an adult may repeat a sound, part of a word, a full word, phrase or sentence. They may also stretch out or prolong sounds and, in some cases, be unable to produce a sound at a particular time. We use Smooth Speech as a program to treat adult stuttering.
